A BOSS at Scotland's only private jail has quit after four years in the job.

Stewart Yates, left, resigned from his job as assistant director of Kilmarnock Prison.

The 42-year-old handed in his resignation and walked out two weeks ago, telling friendshewasplanning to pursue a career in health care. Prison chiefs have changed the locks to his office.

Yates was an award-winning psychiatric nurse before becoming assistant director when the privately-run jail opened.

One source said: ``Yates just disappeared. It came as a bolt out of the blue.''

In 1999, Yates appeared in court charged with threatening wife Carol during a bust-up at their home in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow.

He was unavailable for comment yesterday.
