Letter of the Day - Thomas Elliott responds

Letters
Canada: Dead MTC inmate's father responds.
Tuesday, December 02, 2003 - 17:00

Editorial - I am writing in response to the write up about my son Jeffery Elliott.

I would like to comment on work well done.

I appreciate it greatly.

I am appalled by the insensitive comments that MPP Garfield Dunlop expressed in the newspaper regarding actions being persued by my family and I to make the public aware of what jail privatization is all about.

I understand that Mr. Dunlop is the Corrections Critic.

If he thinks that what I am doing is just a normal part of the grieving process, I am aware that anger is a normal part of the grieving process and comments such as that of Mr. Dunlop, anger me.

How would he feel if he had a son or daughter that got into trouble with the law and was sent to the Super Jail?

Would he fear for the safety of his children?

What if his son/daughter got hurt in the jail and less than a month later die an agonizing death from blood poisoning with no insight as to what actually happened?

As far as I am concerned, the privatization of CNCC is just 5 year experiment.

The inmates are used as guinea pigs for this twisted experiment.

How many guinea pigs are going to die before this experiment gives the results that the Conservative Government want.

I am fully aware that the Central North Correctional Center is run by the American Company of MTC based in Utah.

It is a for-profts organization.

Isn't it nice that all the profits are flowing south of the border?

Also First Correctional Medical is in charge of the medical staff at CNCC.

This oganization is also US based. As far as I am concerned, this institution's medical staff needs to be seriously reviewed at all costs.

Jeffery's death is the third this year.

Is that normal for a jail to have that many deaths in such a short period of time?

Since when does cutting costs have to cut the lives short of humans like me and you that are in jail?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Thomas Elliott
