Nevada: State takes over CCA prison.

Oct 2, 2004
Nevada takes over operations at women's prison

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. Nevada has taken over operations at the state's only women's prison.

Administration at the Southern Nevada Women's Correctional Center in North Las Vegas had been marred in recent years by a guard-inmate pregnancy and complaints of bad food and poor medical care.

Governor Kenny Guinn and top state prison administrators let a contract with Tennessee-based Corrections Corporation of America expire earlier this year.

They also rejected bids from three other firms of up to seven-point-two (M) Million dollars a year.

Nevada corrections chief Jackie Crawford says it'll probably cost the state more than eight (M) Million dollars a year to run the prison.

The facility's got about 500 inmates.
