CNCC earns international accreditation

Penetanguishene - Central North Correctional Centre (CNCC), Canada's first privately operated correctional facility, today passed a 3-day inspection by the leading international accrediting organization for prisons and jails, the American Correctional Association (ACA). This makes CNCC the only ACA-accredited correctional facility in Canada.

"We are very pleased with the results of this audit," said Acting Facility Administrator, Phill Clough. "CNCC employees worked very hard ensuring that we were well prepared for the audit. Earning ACA accreditation allows us to join a select group of other elite North American Facilities. We will continue to meet these international benchmarks and the high standards set for us by the ministry."

Founded in 1870, the ACA is the oldest and largest international correctional association in the world. ACA accredits only those facilities meeting rigorous standards developed by the independent Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. Auditors use a 43-point evaluation process to review correctional facilities in security, inmate programming, medical care, human resources, safety, sanitation and maintenance.

MTC Corrections Vice President Al Murphy added, "This has been a very through inspection. The ACA team walked every inch of this facility and reviewed all aspects of the operation.

"Passing this audit is a reflection of the commitment to excellence our employees have," Murphy added. "It is also a testimony to the strong partnership MTCC has with its Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) staff members. Their commitment to achieving this milestone has been tremendous."

CNCC is Canada's first privately operated correctional facility. It is one of 13 correctional facilities operated by MTC worldwide.
