Local News - Six days before Jeffrey Elliott died, the 20-year-old called his grandmother from jail in Penetanguishene, Ont., where he was serving the final month of his one-year jail sentence for robbery. From all reports, the young man was upbeat and was feeling fine. He told his grandmother that he loved her, loved his father, had learned his lesson while in jail and was eager to return home.

Days later, Jeffrey’s father, Tom Elliott, was informed by an Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police constable his son was in serious condition, lying in a hospital bed in Toronto and fighting for his life. On Thursday, Mr. Elliott and his family filed into Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Pembroke for Jeffrey’s funeral to say their final goodbyes.

“All we have is memories and we have no answers,” said Mr. Elliott in an interview yesterday. “I’m not happy at all. We want answers and we aren’t going to stop until we get them. As a family we definitely want answers.”

Mr. Elliott wants to know how a cut led to his son’s death and why he was transferred to such a large facility when he was only serving a one-year sentence. His family was expecting to welcome Jeffrey back to their Beachburg home on Sept. 26 – his scheduled release date from jail.
